A 27-year-old Turkish national and suspected people smuggler was being treated for a gunshot wound to the leg in an Alexandroupoli hospital on Monday following a shootout with police near the border with Turkey. The Turkish smugglers were spotted by Greek border police through thermal cameras. After refusing to surrender the Turkish national opened fire towards the Greek officers with an automated rifle emptying several magazines before getting arrested.
Officers detained a second Turk, aged 25, and a group of 31 undocumented migrants. The two men were spotted trying to smuggle migrants over the Evros River.
